When Dale A. Randall of Grand Rapids was looking for a contractor to replace windows, doors and siding on his home, a recommendation from a co-worker was the deciding factor.

“We weren’t familiar with the company,” said Randall, who checked to make sure the company was licensed and bonded.

He got a bid from another contractor, but the first contractor’s bid came in lower and left no extra work for Randall to do. That along with the recommendation convinced Randall to go with Peterson Windows and Siding in Nashwauk.

“I thought there was a lot of bang for the buck,” he said.

To find a contractor for a home project, such referrals from others could be the greatest persuader.

For Randall and his wife, it worked out well.

“We are extremely pleased with the results and the professionalism of the contractor,” he said. “The materials used were name-brand, the contractor was very knowledgeable and thorough in explaining what he would be doing and when. And best of all, he and his associates showed up when he said they would and charged to the dime what he said it would cost.”

When the Randalls wanted to make changes to the project, the contractor was quick to accommodate them.

For many, asking friends and neighbors for recommendations as Randall did tops the list of ways to find a contractor. Other avenues are to ask about similar projects being done in your neighborhood, check the Yellow Pages, do Internet searches and check with trade and industry associations for local contractors who do the kinds of projects you’re looking to have done.
